If there's one image that defines Siargao beyond surfing, it's the Maasin Coconut Plantation (often referred to as the Maasin Palm Tree Road ), a perfectly aligned corridor of towering coconut palms that has become the island's most photographed spot. Just steps away, the Maasin River offers a completely different experience: peaceful kayaking through palm-fringed waterways surrounded by untouched nature. Together, they make for a perfect half-day adventure.

Why It's Famous

The Maasin Coconut Plantation (often called the palm tree road of the Philippines ) has become one of Siargao's most photographed spots . The road is lined with perfectly aligned coconut palm trees, their fronds forming a natural canopy overhead. When morning or afternoon light filters through the leaves, the perspective down the corridor is what most people have seen in photos before they arrive. Pair it with our guide to choosing Del Carmen over General Luna as your base.

Photography Tips

  • Early morning is best: Arrive at 6-7 AM for soft light and empty roads
  • Use the road as leading lines: Stand in the middle of the road for the classic symmetrical shot
  • Watch for traffic: It's a functioning road; always be aware of motorbikes and vehicles
  • Bring props: A colorful dress, surfboard, or motorbike adds interest to photos
  • Consider drone shots: Aerial views reveal the true scale of the plantation

⚠️ Safety Note: While the road looks peaceful in photos, it's an active thoroughfare. Never lie down in the road, and always have someone watching for approaching vehicles.

What disappoints people

Maasin is quieter and more local than the big-ticket attractions — which is part of the appeal, but also what catches some visitors off guard:

  • The view deck is only impressive at the right time. The famous bent palm tree and the long coconut road photograph beautifully at sunrise and golden hour. At noon, the coconuts cast short shadows and the road looks flat and ordinary. If you're going specifically for photos, 6–7 AM or 5–6 PM are the right windows.
  • The river can be lower than expected in dry season. Maasin River's level drops significantly between February and May. Kayaking in shallow water is still enjoyable but lacks the lush, full-river feel you see in wet-season photos. If you're visiting March–May, the coconut plantation and viewdeck are the primary reason to come.
  • No lifeguards, no guides provided as standard. Kayak and SUP rentals are run by local families on site — equipment is simple, no instruction is included, and nobody monitors you on the water. If you're not a confident swimmer, wear a life jacket (usually provided with the rental). The rope swing is fun but the current near it varies with the season.
  • It's a working coconut plantation, not a manicured park. Some guests arrive expecting a resort-style eco-attraction. Maasin is genuinely local — vendors at the viewdeck, motorbikes parked along the road, families doing laundry at the river. That's the charm of it, but it's worth knowing in advance.
